Z-Wave 700 Series

868 MHz (EU) / 908 MHz (US) / 916 MHz (ANZ). Mesh radio with a project-defined node count and range. Products using the Z-Wave name follow the current Alliance certification route; connection behaviour still depends on the certified hub and lock combination. Confirm the S2 security evidence and target controller. Best fit: a defined North American residential or alarm-panel route.

Zigbee 3.0

2.4 GHz, IEEE 802.15.4 mesh. Real-world behaviour varies between manufacturers and controllers, so test the specific lock and hub combination. Confirm the cluster list, credential workflow and destination-market radio evidence. Best fit: an OEM route with a named Zigbee controller and documented acceptance test.

Matter (Thread + Wi-Fi)

Matter is an application-layer standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) that can run over Thread or Wi-Fi. Confirm the target controller, commissioning flow, security evidence, certification route and local or cloud operating path for the finished lock. Treat a module roadmap as a plan, not a current product capability.

Tuya Wi-Fi + BLE Combo Module (CBU)

The most common radio route in Trudian smart locks. ESP32-based, dual-band Wi-Fi + BLE 5.0. The selected model can be reviewed for its cloud, app and named property-management connection path. Best for: Wi-Fi connected properties and OEM projects with a defined account and support scope.

Zigbee Module (Tuya ZigBee CBP)

Tuya-certified Zigbee 3.0 module based on Silicon Labs EFR32MG series. Pairing and cluster behaviour must be tested with the named gateway or coordinator. OEM/private-label planning starts at 500 units; final scope is confirmed in the written quotation.

Z-Wave 700 Module (Silicon Labs ZGM130)

For North American OEM customers targeting the alarm-panel and professional-installer market. Z-Wave 700 series (ZGM130S) with S2 security can be reviewed per SKU. Certification scope, test schedule and commercial terms are confirmed for the hardware, firmware and destination; Trudian can review a custom ODM project from the 500-unit programme.

Matter over Thread (via Tuya TMOD)

Tuya's TMOD module combines a Thread radio with the Matter application layer. The selected product still needs a target controller, commissioning review and current CSA evidence. Treat the NL-700 TMOD route as a roadmap item until the finished product and certification are confirmed in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions: Z-Wave, Zigbee and Matter Smart Lock OEM

Z-Wave is a 868/908 MHz mesh protocol that uses an alliance certification route; actual connection behaviour still depends on the certified hub and device combination. Zigbee 3.0 is an open 2.4 GHz mesh protocol with broad ecosystem support but variable real-world behaviour between manufacturers. Matter is an application-layer standard running over Thread or Wi-Fi; test the selected lock with the target controller before committing. For OEM strategy, choose the radio by destination market, credential workflow, named connection and documented support scope.

Matter does not immediately replace the installed base of Z-Wave and Zigbee hubs. Compare the radio range, security evidence, target controller, certification route and selected lock model. For a new OEM product, evaluate Matter as an additional option only when the target market, hardware and connection tests support it.

Products using the Z-Wave name follow the current Z-Wave Alliance certification route, in addition to regional radio requirements such as FCC, CE RED or ISED. The module, SKU, test house, firmware and destination determine the evidence, timeline and commercial scope. Confirm the current certification quotation before committing to an OEM schedule.

Zigbee 3.0 certification does not guarantee real-world connection across all devices and hubs. The standard allows manufacturer-specific cluster extensions (Tuya Zigbee uses custom clusters alongside standard ones) which can cause partial functionality or non-pairing with non-Tuya hubs. Always test your specific Zigbee lock with your target hub (SmartThings, Home Assistant, Amazon Echo, Philips Hue) before committing to production. Zigbee locks certified against Zigbee 3.0 using only standard door lock clusters (cluster 0x0101) have the best cross-hub connection results. Request the Zigbee cluster list from the manufacturer before purchasing OEM modules.

Thread is the IP-based mesh networking protocol that Matter runs over for battery-powered devices. A Thread Border Router bridges the Thread mesh network to the home IP network (Wi-Fi/Ethernet), allowing Matter controllers (Apple Home Hub, Google Nest, Amazon Echo 4th gen) to communicate with Thread devices. Without a Border Router, Matter over Thread devices cannot connect to the home network. Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub 2nd gen, and Amazon Echo 4th gen all include built-in Thread Border Routers. For OEM deployments, verify that the target ecosystem hub includes a Border Router before specifying Matter over Thread — Matter over Wi-Fi does not require a Border Router.

Matter certification follows the current Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) route. The module, product implementation, test house, firmware and target market determine the evidence, timeline and commercial scope. Confirm the current CSA and laboratory quotation; a pre-certified module does not automatically cover the finished lock use case.

For European residential OEM smart locks, choose Zigbee, Matter, Z-Wave or Wi-Fi/BLE by the target controller, credential workflow, radio environment, data path and certification evidence. Z-Wave may suit a defined installer or alarm-panel route; Wi-Fi/BLE may suit a standalone product. CE RED requirements apply to radio products sold in the EU; verify the current route for the exact hardware.
