OEM vs ODM for smart access products

Choose the route according to the amount of product, software, packaging and ownership change you actually need.

Updated 7 August 2026 · Reviewed for programme planning
Short answer: OEM usually starts from an existing model with branding and selected configuration changes. ODM adds deeper hardware, firmware, tooling or industrial-design work and therefore needs more volume, testing and ownership decisions.

Decide what changes

  • Logo, packaging, colour and manuals: usually an OEM conversation.
  • App branding, API, workflow or firmware changes: define ownership and maintenance.
  • New enclosure, mechanism, electronics or tooling: treat as ODM scope.

Lock the commercial boundary

Document MOQ, sample approval, certification responsibility, tooling ownership, firmware access, change control, warranty and support. The cheapest unit price is not the same as the lowest programme risk.
