Short answer: Choose IP when the project can support structured networking, scalable management and protocol integration. Choose analog or 2-wire retrofit when existing wiring and controlled replacement cost are the dominant constraints.
Compare the project boundary
- IP: Ethernet, PoE or managed network, easier multi-building expansion and stronger SIP/ONVIF options.
- Analog: familiar legacy topology, often simpler for a like-for-like replacement but with more limited data and integration paths.
- 2-wire retrofit: preserves suitable existing cable while changing the endpoint and system boundary; compatibility must be verified model by model.
Questions to settle before selection
Map the number of entrances, apartments, indoor monitors, door releases, risers, network segments and handover owner. Check whether the property team already operates a VMS, PBX or access platform. Select the route that the installer can commission and the property team can support.
Evidence to request
Ask for a wiring diagram, maximum distance and power assumptions, supported protocols, firmware notes and a test plan for audio, video, door release and failure recovery.
