Why does a smart lock battery drain fast?

Fast drain is usually a system-condition problem, not a simple battery specification problem. Diagnose the opening, user flow and network before changing the lock.

Short answer: Check latch friction and door alignment first, then credential volume, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth activity, temperature and battery quality. Record the model, firmware and measured runtime before concluding that a different lock is required.

Check mechanical load first

A misaligned latch can keep a motor under load on every opening. Collect door thickness, handing, mortise condition and a short video of the latch cycle. A lock that works on a bench can drain quickly when the strike or frame is tight.

Then check operating conditions

  • Count daily unlocks and identify high-turnover users or repeated retries.
  • Check whether the device is maintaining a weak wireless connection or polling an external gateway.
  • Compare battery chemistry, installation temperature and the low-voltage warning threshold.
  • Confirm firmware, access mode and whether a keypad, fingerprint reader or face reader is always active.

When to escalate to a model review

Escalate with the SKU, firmware, door photos, battery type, measured cycle count and site temperature. This evidence lets a supplier separate mechanical fit, configuration and hardware questions.
