A smart-lock support case is rarely just a hardware question. Battery condition, door alignment, mortise fit, installation sequence, firmware, app account and network conditions can each affect the result. The distributor’s cost grows when those boundaries are not recorded and every symptom becomes an unstructured return.
Quality evidence that changes support work
| Evidence area | Why it matters after sale | Channel record |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration identity | Different hardware or firmware revisions can need different checks. | Model, batch, revision and firmware record. |
| Door fit | Binding and alignment can resemble an electronic fault. | Door type, thickness, mortise and installation photos. |
| Functional test | Credential, motor and fallback behavior must be known before rollout. | Sample test criteria and pass record. |
| Change control | Untracked component or firmware changes complicate repeat diagnosis. | Approved revision and release notice. |
| Spare plan | Parts cannot be selected reliably without a known configuration. | Compatible spare list and approval owner. |
Do not treat every support case as a return
A return decision should follow an initial separation of power, battery, mechanical fit, credential route, application or platform, network and the hardware itself. Requiring basic evidence protects the installer, distributor and end user from repeated site work based on an assumption.
Build a support route before the launch
- Define the distributor’s first-line checks and response owner.
- Set the evidence required before engineering escalation.
- Agree who authorizes firmware action, parts, RMA and commercial replacement.
- Keep spare inventory matched to the deployed range.
- Record recurring fault patterns and correct the installation or product release process.
What not to claim
Do not present an unverified failure rate, return reduction or lifetime saving as a product advantage. It is more credible to state the support mechanism, quality-control boundary and evidence required for the selected model. Measured channel data can be added later when it has a defined cohort and method.
