OSDP v2 vs Wiegand — Why the Protocol Matters

Most enterprise integrators now specify OSDP v2 for new installations. Here is what changes at the door:

Wiegand:One-way unencrypted signal. Interceptable by $50 relay attack device. No tamper detection. Reader cannot report status back to panel.
Wiegand:Cannot carry biometric data. Max 37-bit credential. No firmware upgrade path over cable.
OSDP v2 (AC-800):Bidirectional RS-485 with AES-128 SCB encryption. Relay attacks intercepted and rejected. Cable tamper triggers alert.
OSDP v2 (AC-800):Carries biometric results, reader status LED/buzzer control, and firmware updates over the same RS-485 cable.

FAQ

OSDP v2 Access Control — Common B2B Questions

Wiegand (1980s protocol) transmits unencrypted card data in one direction with no authentication — interceptable with a 50 USD device in under 30 seconds. OSDP v2 (IEC 60839-11-5, 2020) uses bidirectional RS-485 communication with AES-128 Secure Channel Block encryption, mutual authentication between reader and controller, physical cable tamper detection with alerts, and biometric data transport capability. Virtually all enterprise access control software now specifies OSDP v2 for new installations. The SIA (Security Industry Association) formally deprecated Wiegand as a secure protocol and recommends OSDP v2 for all new deployments requiring cryptographic security.

Lenel OnGuard, Genetec Security Center, Software House C-CURE 9000, Honeywell Pro-Watch, Milestone XProtect Access, and any OSDP v2 or PSIA RSAI compliant platform. REST API is available for custom BMS and PMS integration. For platforms not on the standard compatibility list, OSDP v2 compliance ensures interoperability with any software that implements the SIA OSDP v2 standard correctly. Contact our technical team for a compatibility confirmation for your specific software version before ordering.

2 doors per panel (4 reader ports: entry and exit per door). Network installations are unlimited: a 100-door installation uses 50 AC-800 panels connected via TCP/IP Ethernet, all managed from a single software instance. Each panel operates independently with local credential storage and access decisions, so network failure at one panel does not affect others. For very large installations (500 plus doors), contact our technical team for enterprise panel specifications with higher local storage capacity.

100,000 credentials and 200,000 access events are stored locally in non-volatile flash memory. Network loss does not interrupt local access decisions — the panel continues granting or denying access based on locally stored credentials and schedules. Each door relay is independently configurable as fail-safe (unlocks on power loss — for life safety egress) or fail-secure (locks on power loss — for high-security areas). Battery backup input accepts 12V DC to keep the panel and door hardware operational during power outages. Events are buffered locally and synced to the management software when connectivity is restored.

Yes. The OSDP v2 Biometric extension (OSDP v2.2) carries fingerprint templates or facial match results over AES-128 encrypted RS-485, enabling on-reader biometric matching with the result transmitted securely to the panel. Compatible with HID Signo Bio, Suprema BioEntry W3, and Trudian F2-B biometric readers. Wiegand-output biometric readers are also supported via the Wiegand 26/34 input ports on the AC-800 for sites migrating from legacy Wiegand infrastructure. Specify OSDP v2 readers for new installations to avoid Wiegand security vulnerabilities.

Standard B2B wholesale MOQ is 50 panels per order. Sample units of 1–5 panels are available for system integration testing and software compatibility verification before placing production orders — sample cost refundable on first MOQ order. Production lead time: 15–25 days. OEM branding (your logo on panel enclosure and management software) from MOQ 200 units with 4–6 week lead time. White-label cloud access management platform with your brand name and domain is included with OEM orders of 100 plus panels. For large projects (200 plus panels), dedicated production slots and project pricing are available.

CE marking (RED 2014/53/EU, RoHS 2011/65/EU) for European markets, FCC Part 15 for USA, and UKCA for UK. SIA OSDP v2 protocol compliance per IEC 60839-11-5. IP65 enclosure rating for outdoor electrical cabinet installation. ISO 9001:2015 factory certification. For Middle East projects, SASO CoC for Saudi Arabia and TDRA documentation for UAE are available. Full certification documentation package — Declarations of Conformity, test reports, and SIA OSDP compliance documentation — is provided with B2B orders for system integrator tender submissions.
